Heating and Cooling Your Home Efficiently

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are modern conveniences that often go unnoticed until there is a problem. However, it is important that you keep these systems properly maintained so they operate efficiently and help conserve energy.

Although we are surrounded each day by the comforts and luxury of modern technology, the majority of the time they go unnoticed. One convenience we unconsciously enjoy in our homes and in public are our heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (often shortened to HVAC). However, it is important that we pay closer attention to these systems, because they can eat up a lot of energy if they are left to run inefficiently. In your home, know what types of HVAC systems are available to you and which will save the most money and the most energy.

Most commonly today, new homes come with a central HVAC system already installed. The combination of all of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning needs is convenient but is also expensive and energy draining. However, routine upgrades and maintenance can keep your system up-to-date and increasingly more energy efficient.

There are alternatives to a central HVAC system. For cooling your home, you can use an evaporative cooler, or swamp cooler, rather than air conditioning. While this type of system only works in low-humidity climates, it is the more natural way to cool the air and thus uses up to four times less electricity than a regular air conditioner. An alternative to heating your home is to use a fireplace and wood burning stove. However, these alternatives can be dangerously inefficient if not installed, maintained and used correctly. You may need to replace old fireplaces and wood stoves in your home to keep up with modern standards of energy efficiency.
